Has Your Loved One Been Neglected or Abused at a Nursing Home?

Seniors living in nursing homes rely heavily on their caregivers. When they are neglected the results can be heart-breaking. Their vulnerability makes them a target for physical, emotional or even sexual abuse. Each victim responds differently from signs withdrawal to explosions of unexplained anger. Remember that you know your loved one best, and if he or she has complained about a nurse or attendant please take their complaints seriously.

How Common Are Reports of Abuse?

As more and more of the elderly enter senior living communities, the reports of elder abuse continue to rise. Neglect can result in malnourishment, dehydration, infection, bed sores and falling all of which can be fatal to someone of advanced years.

How Can I Recognize Abuse?

Look at the hygiene in the senior’s room. Is it as clean as it should be? How often is food and water being brought in? Have there been in any major emotional changes in your loved one? Physical abuse and neglect manifest themselves with certain symptoms.

  • Bruises, cuts, black-eyes or burns that cannot be explained by the facility or that often reappear
  • Crying out in pain without a visible injury
  • Depressed, distant or apathetic in attitude
  • Does not react to physical pain
