Suffered a serious bleeding event while taking Xarelto? Call 1-800-ATTORNEY.

Xarelto is a type of prescription medication given to individuals who are at an increased risk of strokes and pulmonary embolisms. This is a drug that has only recently surpassed sales of a similar drug, Pradaxa, used to treat the same conditions. Recently, complaints about Xarelto resulted in class action lawsuits due to the drug’s inability to stop bleeding once it’s started. In fact, at least 65 people have died as a result of the adverse effects they experienced while taking this drug.

Serious Side Effects from Xarelto

Xarelto works by stopping blood clots from forming, which if left unchecked can cause strokes as well as pulmonary embolisms (blood clots which travel up a person’s leg, getting lodged in the lungs).

This is a powerful drug which needs close monitoring. If you are taking Xarelto, keep an eye out on some of the following symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Vomiting blood
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Red brown urine
  • Fatigue
  • Fainting
  • Dizzy spells
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Muscle weakness

If you have any of these red flag symptoms, see a doctor immediately or head over to the Emergency Room. A few hours can mean a world of difference regarding your health. If you suffer serious or permanent injuries as a result of Xarelto, or if you have suffered from a serious bleeding event (hemorrhaging) while on Xarelto, call 1-800-ATTORNEY now!

Xarelto FDA Approval

Xarelto got approval by the Food and Drug Administration back in 2011. Despite the fact that this new generation blood thinner has been linked to dozens of deaths, there have been no recalls. That being said, the FDA has changed its box warning on Xarelto earlier this year.

Most people taking Xarelto aren’t aware of the adverse effects until it’s too late. The reason why most patients who are considered high risk when it comes to blood clot formation and strokes prefer Xarelto is because it doesn’t require constant monitoring like warfarin, a traditional blood thinning medication that must be administered under close supervision. That being said, patients should be warned of the inherent risk in taking the drug so they’re better able to take precautionary measures.

The FDA’s decision to put up black box warnings on Xarelto boxes earlier this year is a case of too little, too late since it doesn’t take into account the hundreds of thousands of people that have been taking this drug over the last 3 years.
